Silver Dollars On The Eyes of The City

I was inspired recently by a few photos of a city taken with a Lomography camera of some variety, a Holga with alternating color filters I believe. I don't have access to one of these cameras but I do have a few photos from New York when I was up there a few months back and a copy of photoshop so I thought I would pay homage to this style of photography. While I was messing around with the photo I ended up adding a bit of fake tilt shift focusing as well, in my own way at least. I thought that it ended up pretty nice so I figured why not post it for everyone to use. The title is something I found jotted down in my notebook and It seemed appropriate because of the disrepair of the building here...

Since I am being so open with the fact that the whole mood within the photo was done in post production I will show you what the original shot looked like, pretty lifeless I thought. Anyways, enjoy!

reconstruct / deconstruct

Condos are popping up all over town, this is a building being converted so the insides are being gutted to make way for living space. I never shoot architecture it seems so here is something close(ish). Gotta love that sky...

"Inside"

Here is a pretty cool image that makes for a pretty nice desktop I think. I have posted two versions which are very subtly different, the only difference being one is in color. I've decided not to talk about where this photo was taken and what it was taken of because I thought it would make for a nice little contest of a sort. The first person to leave a comment stating where this photo was taken and what it is of will get to pick a couple of songs on iTunes and I will gift them to you. If there are any restrictions due to where you live then maybe we can work something else out? No promises here, just thought it would be fun and I know it's probably pretty easy anyway so, tell me... what is this? (and you need to be pretty specific, I wont take a general answer like, the planet earth or anything.)

Update: if you take a peek into the comments you will find that this was one pretty quickly! Congratulations to the winner!

"Iron" and "Iron Two"

I love trains. I love the sound they make as they pass by in the distance and I am fascinated by the idea that they are bound to the track on which they are set onto, destined to follow these set paths though it's existence. Here we have a couple shots of some rusty old tracks long out of service and overgrown with weeds. I prefer the first of these two shots myself but I also like the simplicity of the second one which is always nice when it comes to desktops which is why I posted that one as well.

"Ram" and "Ram Two"

Here we have two different views of a hood ornament on an old rusty truck. Something about the little sculpture struck me as interesting, mostly it's overbearing horns and the fact that you never see hood ornaments anymore, especially not this detailed.

"Red"

This photo feels kind of empty both physically and emotionally what with the lack of a bulb in this busted looking light fixture as if to say there will be no light beyond twighlight. The old dried up piece of vine seems to drive this feeling to another level if you care to look that far into this lonely desktop. Sill a nice image for a desktop though. Not to districting that is.

"Empty"

So this is a departure from what other things I've done here on the site recently. I started messing around with a photo from when I was up in NYC a few weeks back and used a technique that I used to love to play around with which is the bottom of the image and is a pretty slick and easy way to make some really dramatic imagery. Then came some messing around with the color and a nice Puerto Rico sky to top it off. Let me know what you think and maybe I will do more of this type of thing around here.

"Figure Eight"

I was lucky enough to have a chance to visit this wall while I was over in L.A. recently and I'm sure some people out there know what it is from. For those of you who might not know it is a wall that was photographed and used in the design work of the Elliott Smith album "Figure Eight" It really was a great album cover. The only trouble really is that people had written all over it which is nice and all from a "let's pay our respects to the late Elliott Smith by writing a personal note in his memory" but it seems like over time the writing has gotten to be somewhat abused and it kind of defiles the original feeling I'm sure the wall had. All the same it was nice to be able to visit. Seems like not to many people know that the album cover for Figure Eight was actually two different photos which you can clearly see if you look around the edges of Elliott's body on the cover. At any rate I hope that there are some of you out there that would appreciate this image because that is what its there for and I hope you enjoy it.

"pillar"

I've got one last photo that I would like to share from my Puerto Rico trip. Well, at least for now that is. As I was wandering in Old San Juan we came across this big sculpture/monument/thing. As with many things I came across while I was there I'm really not to sure what this is or what it represents. It was one of the strangest things I came across though because it was just this big huge cylinder that stretched about 30 or so feet up into the air that had all sorts of shards of what looked like clay pots of some kind. It was the center piece for a small parkish area and really stood out from the rest of the architecture in the area.

"retreat"

One of the staples of Old San Juan's touristy draws were these little huts that were built out on the points of every fort around. I'm not sure what they are called but they were all over the place and every gift like shop had photos of them or little figures of them for sale. I would have to admit that they are pretty cool. This shot is of the little entrance hallway to get into one of them. Soldiers would take turns running down into these to shoot out of the holes and then run back out to reload their rifle as another ran in to shoot. Anyways, heres the photo. As with the desktop previous to this one, its a little dark and will most likely work best on a brighter, more detailed, flat screen monitor.

"Graves"

We passed through a huge old graveyard beside a fort and there were all kinds of intricate graves, some sad, some peaceful like this series of grave stones that had three figures that almost seemed to be alive.

"At The End Of The Road"

I saw this structure on postcards in the airport before I left and Im not sure what its significance is but it was a really cool looking little building and it was covered in pigeons. Right next to this there was a little lot where people were feeding tons of pigeons and there was this amazing wall full of little holes that the birds flew in and out of.

"chess"

I shot this while I was visiting some friends of a friend in Philadelphia. It is part of a chess board in the living room of the house that I was staying in. If I'm remembering correctly the chess board was a hand carved chess set from mexico that was bought down there on vacation. As with the seagull image which I posted a while back I like the use of white in the image and the way the subject matter kind of creeps out of it.
