Square

I turned a corner in memphis and this yellow square was staring at me. I don't usually find such bold imagery in my everyday life so I took atvantage of the moment and snapped a photo. Enjoy!

Summer Melon

I was going to title this summer but turns out I already have a desktop by that name. I just glanced at my post count and noticed that this is desktop number 181. The first image on this blog like version of the site appeared in august 2005. Where does the time go? Anyway, after posting this on my photoblog I realized it would probably make for a fun desktop. Im sure at least one of you are wondering why I chose to make such a colorful feeling melon image B&W.. It just worked better I thought. It added a somber, relaxed mood to it which was why I shot it with the headphones on. As always, enjoy!

Guard

I went back and forth on weather or not I wanted to go with the black and white with a bit of color here and there look for this image and in t he end I decided to give it a go. It works well here I think because the shot was nearly white to begin with so why not go ahead and knock out the color all together? At any rate, I thought it made for a nice looking desktop so here we go! Download till your hearts content and your desktop is happy.

Meditate

On a quiet rainy day I had a wonderful chance to sit down and enjoy the silence of the rain for a while. Everything turned a wonderful shade of grey and light all around me became so subtle that I just had to stop and take a couple of photos and I figured why not shoot my incense burning. The box next to it is a chime which contains a ton of tiny little metal balls and 4 metal bars suspended in the middle. you turn the box upside down and all the balls stick to a pad on the top of the box and slowly fall down onto the chimes one by one. Such a wonderful, random thing and oh so peaceful.

Why irony? Because its an air conditioner, there to cool off a house. I love the strange mood in this and I rarely use this kind of balanced symmetry in a photo so its a nice change of pace. Not to much else to say about this one... Well, what are you waiting for? Dig in!

At the End of the World

Wow, has it really been a month since my last desktop posting? Sorry for the downtime everyone, I know how anxious you guys get when there is not a new release. So I finally had some time to play with the new CS3 suite of apps outside of normal use and it is some really really impressive software. Everything is so smooth and fast and the new palate system is remarkable. It is everything I wish it would be. Seeing as before this I was using photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, and pre-Adobe macromedia apps (the very first versions available for osx) this is a huge step forward for my workflow. I look forward to studying the apps more as time goes on. I still remember learning how to use photoshop in version 3 before layers... even something as simple as a drop shadow was done with elaborate channel tricks. Sorry, I'm getting waaaaay off track here.

This illustration is based off of a photo I took in Delaware last weekend at a river front. There was a shirtless old man jogging down the path while I was sitting around in the grass and he eventually made his way back around to a bench in front of me carrying along some water and a newspaper. For some reason it was a humbling thing to watch. So I took a photo and it was perfect to mess around with Illustrators live trace and give photoshops new workflow a go. The point there was simply the edge of the photo that i curved on out to that wave shape and to the left where the ground seems to head upward is the base of a tree. At any rate, it ended up pretty interesting so here you go. Enjoy!

This Afternoon

This photo was an another experiment and involved me wanting to emulate Lomo style photos somewhat. I have never really used this low but high contrast kind of a thing to get that redish grey color rather than pure black and i am really liking it. I also offset things a bit as you can see to get a double exposure kind of a thing going on. The little preview image below does not really do it justice so give it a click and grab the full verison to see it in all off its splendor...

Anywhere But Here

Looking at this photo that was taken just out of the blue of a staircase in a basement makes me feel like I should be going somewhere. As though these stairs could be anywhere in the world and I am here at the bottom and anything could be waiting up a the top. So use your imagination and use these stairs as a way to get away. Caution (stained glass everything)

A week or two ago I was working at at a church installing the first parts of a sound system that will be going in during a renovation after a fire and the place was totally empty. This was interesting because of the stained glass windows and the way they would cast this multi colored light onto everything below. Even the most simple object was transformed in a way. Here is one of those images for your desktoping pleasure.

A Narritive For The Begining

This is an image from my Puerto Rico trip archives. I always wanted to do something with this image of a girl with her umbrella and her father but always hesitated because the sky behind them was not what I wanted. I took an additional photo of the landscape behind them that I had taken moments before from the same spot and combined the two to get what you see here. I just love the moment that was captured here so unknowingly and I am happy to finally share it with you here. Enjoy!

The Dancer

There is a trick within the desktop making world, at least on the mac side of things, where you are supposed to give a desktop image a weight to the right side of the image, not the left as you see here. Supposedly because the Mac OS has always gone with aligning system icons in the finder on the right side of the screen you should always take care to make mac desktop images left heavy. For the longest time I followed this rule but as of late I have found myself ignoring it more often than not. I feel as though if you keep a tidy desktop then this should not be to big of a deal. When I take a photo, I frame it t he way I do for a reason. In a western train of thought your eye, while looking at an image or a page or a screen, generally starts looking from the top left because you are trained to do so when you learn to read and write. This means that an image may feel awkward if the balance lies on the left of an image. I know that there are times when the movement in a photo or a specific subject may require you to bend this impulse a bit but generally I seem to prefer the right weighted image.

Actually, I have reason taking a liking to sticking a subject right smack in the center of an image, interesting in a minimal kind of a way because it restricts the movement in the photo. The image here is interesting because if you notice the weight of the subject feels like it is the wood in the bottom right but you could just as easily pick the dancing flame in the center as your focal point. It splits your attention in a way. If you have a moment and you have read this far then leave a comment and let me know your thoughts on the matter, composition is such an interesting thing to me and makes or breaks a photo in my eyes.

So, at any rate, here is a photo of a fire in my fireplace. The first one of the season in fact. Enjoy!

In Your Shadow

Late one night I was shooting photos for some halloween promo type shots and came across this window in the basement of the sound company I work for that I have been wanting to shoot for years so camera in hand I shot away. 60hz

I shot this randomly at a show I was working this past weekend running sound for the indie band Beirut. Im not sure if they realized how much work it took to get them sounding good, I think they were used to a lot of clubs that turn the PA on and leave the band to play. It was a tricky show because they had such a large array of acoustic instruments and so I had 6 different sensitive condenser mics on stage in a noisy room. Going into it I had only heard their music briefly from their album which I grabbed from emusic to get an idea of what to expect from the night. I barley took my fingers off of the faders during the show because every mic in there kept getting moved around for different instruments which was not really a bad thing, just kept me on my toes thats all.

Sorry, I didn't mean to start rambling about all of that, I'm sure it doesn't really mean much of anything to most of you reading this. To tell you the truth I'm not sure what the keyboard below is called, It's some sort of early electronic organ I know but I don't know which one. All I know is that the only thing they used it for was to pipe out solid bars worth of low end to fill in the bottom end of a few songs which is why I named the desktop 60hz which is right around where this thing was hitting hardest in the room. I just liked the colors of it and knew I wanted to post it asa desktop so here you go!

I Feel Like Going Home

These two shots were taken while I was working a street festival in downtown Winston Salem. Right around dusk what seemed like thousands of bats appeared in the air above the stage. Not low enough to freak anyone out but they were up there flying about in this huge swarm and I couldn't help but stare into the noise they created in the sky. I managed to snap off a couple photos of them in the darkness of dusk and still get some amount of detail in the shape os the flying mammals. I figured since its nearing the Halloween season these might be appropriate to post as desktops. Hopefully you don't mind me taking some liberties with the colors. The name was chosen nearly at random from my iTunes library. Bonus points for anyone who can tell me what song the name is from without looking it up. (or with looking it up, whatever works)

Saku

I had an image from my farm series that I wanted to mess around with in photoshop and this is it. It was a really simple shot snapped off while sitting in a chair out on a porch in the morning but it seemed like such a cool little work of art that seemed like it would be fun to mess with later on. I decided to take a super minimal approach to the image simply because thats how I was feeling when I made it a few minutes ago while listening to a really calm Susumu Yokota album that I picked up on emusic recently called Sakura. The name of the image was named after the first song on that album if you care to know. I see a lot of artists/designers hopping on the trendy looking vector graphic train that have all sorts of elaborate intricate little details and hidden messages in japanese or some techy looking font and I've been through that a year or two ago back when I started making desktops because thats what I thought people wanted but I soon realized that I should simply stick to what I feel like looking at. Anyways, long story short, I decided to take a really simplistic approach to this one and post it as is but also post a photoshop file with layers from the desktop to let readers with photoshop to take it and make their own version of the desktop. I've never tried anything like it before in the past and thought I would give it a shot sooo...

Along with the standard .jpg file I also have available below a photoshop version of this image in hopes that some of you readers will download it, remix it, and send it back to me to post here along side the original. I know that I don't have too many readers who are active on the comments or own a copy of photoshop but I thought it would be fun to give it a shot. To give an example of what you could try is using other images of you shot to layer in with this one or try different colors or shapes or arrangements or whatever. Just take it and make it your own somehow. I just ask that if you come up with something you like then please mail it my way using the contact form on the site or my email for those of you who have it. I suppose thats all for now. Enjoy!

Sea Green See Blue

Anyone care to guess what this is? I can't remember what they are called, something to do with electricity I believe. Whatever it is it caught my eye with its color and shape. I loved the way the blueish color was cast down onto the wood of the post it was sitting on. In retrospect, my only regret was that I didn't tighten up my aperture a bit more than I did to get the whole objet in crystal clear focus. Anyways it makes for a really interesting desktop I think. Enjoy! (the name was taken from a Jaymay song of the same name which you can find over on iTunes if your curious)

Out to Dry

This is the first in a series of desktops featuring photos taken out on a farm just south of Charlottesville Virginia where I will be shooting a wedding in a couple of weeks. I drove up to check out the area and go through details of the big day and while I was there I had the chance to shoot with my new lens and there was plenty of interesting things to sneak in photos of. This first image is for the food lovers out there, more specifically garlic lovers. Picked straight from the garden the garlic was out to dry and with the late afternoon sun coming in through the window it was just itching to have a photo taken of it.

Badlights

I know that simple long exposures are not really all that technically hard to shoot, especially as odd and random as this one here, but something about this shot seemed to scream desktop to me. Maybe its the colors and the composition that drew me to like this one. It was only one out of a couple of them I shot like this while sitting in the back of a car one night but I thought it came out better than this type of shot usually does. Maybe I will look back on this posing and wonder why I added it but thats the way it goes in love and desktops. The name of the desktop was taken from a Dixie Dirt song from one of my favorite albums of 2005, Pieces of the world. (Also, I know the preview here is pretty heavily compressed and is not looking all that good, I had to do this to keep the file size down. I promise the full version is much smoother than this)

Been So Long

If you read the description to Last Call You may or may not realize where this was shot. It is on top of an observation tower at the top of a mountain. Something about this shot hits me in a personal way. Part of it is a reminder that It had been so long since the last time I had been out hiking on my own and it was nice to get out on top of the world and gather my thoughts in a place not so distracting. I could go on more about this but lets jsut say it has more of a personal meaning than other shots I put up here. Also you may notice that I wore sandals up there which I regret doing, they are not really all that appropriate for a mile and a half hike up the side of a mountain, who knows what I was thinking. At any rate, I hope you all enjoy this desktop as much as I do.

Note: The title is from a Vetiver track off of his latest album which I have been meaning to feature in the blog for some time now.

City Of Light

As I was going through photos from my recent trip up to New York I was looking for some decent photos for some new desktops and I came across a couple that I liked but just were not quite up to my standards as of late so I started messing around in photoshop. One thing led to another and I ended up with an idea to join two landscape photos together, one from the city and one from rural Virginia. The result ended up being the collages you see below which was a good bit different than I thought they would be when I started out working on them.

The reason there are so many versions is because I could not decide on any one style or color to post just one so I decided to just post them all. Even one that is considerably different from the others which combined a third photo into the mix. I have dubbed the series 'City of Light' which is the name of a Fennesz song that was playing around the time that I made them.

Note about downloading these: Because there are so many of them I simply made each photo below a link to download the image you click on. I thought this would be the easiest way for it to be done. Alternatively you can also follow this link to download a compressed file containing all of the images in the series. (makes for a nice series to set osx to alternate between automatically or for dual monitor setups.) Also, as always, by downloading these images you agree to my terms of use!

Guitar play

The following photos were shot on a night that spun way off course. What started out as a night to sit down at a coffee shop somewhere and read with Val turned into a musical evening. After happening upon a blues singer in the coffee shop Val went home inspired to get some music into the night. Starting at the piano we quickly ended up over on the guitar for the remainder of the evening and I was inspired to break out the camera and take a few photos. Please excuse the noise in the photos, I was shooting with nothing but a bedside desk lamp so I was shooting at pretty high film speeds. The result of the photos are the following desktops. They are named after songs that were sung while they were shot. Enjoy!

Note: I have also decided to add a new cropping ratio for certain desktops, maybe all of them from here on depending on the response of the decision. You will see that they now have a resolution of 1920x1200. I decided that with all of the widescreen displays out there today that I could get away with releasing desktops with this ratio. In the end I prefer this to the boxy feeling 1600x1200.

"Sunset" and "Sunset Two"

A few days ago there was a huge thunderstorm in town and it happened late in the afternoon so as the sun began to set, the storm started to clear out which left behind these amazing dark clouds covering the sky. As the sun sank lower into the horizon the city started to glow with an orange tint that made everything look really... well, orange. Every thing that I was so used to seeing from day to day looked so different and even something as simple as a fence had this glow to it that made for some really cool photos. This was shot up in New York while I was up there playing a show with Matt as A Drop In Silence. I remember seeing this construction out of the corner of my eye in an alleyway and kind of whipped up my camera as I was walking along to snap a photo. The original is in full color and its a vertical shot but I like this version. "Phantom"

I know the title is kind of silly, I was going to call this ghost but I already have a desktop called Ghost so Phantom it is. This was shot backstage in a theatre where I was working at one night for a show. (Sound engineering and PA systems and all that is one of my lines of work other than design and photography.) So I went backstage and found this cool spot and saw an opportunity for a neat photo. The original was a vertical shot so its cropped as well as I could crop it. When I shot this I stuck the aperture at 20 or something like that and exposed the shot for a good 30 seconds or so which gave me enough time to run down to the other side of the stage and stand there which made for a nice ghostly figure. I thought of messing around a bit more but I was at work and all so this is what I have.

"Awake"

I called this awake because it seems to have that type of effect that happens as you open your eyes after having them closed for a long period of time or after being somewhere really dark then suddenly being in a brightly lit area. Photography is so funny in the way that it wont allow you to expose both extreme light and darkly lit areas. Its a challenge that leads to what some consider a bad photo if it is looked at by someone who, for instance, wishes the person in this photo was in focus and may not understand what the point of this photo is. It is also what separates someone with knowledge of how to use this photographic puzzle to their advantage by exposing for a given effect such as this image where I chose to have the brightness of the outside world shine brightly from behind the inside of the garage. If I had let the camera expose the shot the photo would have been nearly completely black but the person in the distance would have most likely been the focus and the image would not have nearly as much depth as it does here.

At any rate, sorry for over analyzing the photo this time around, hope you enjoy the desktop!

"Cardinal"

This is a desktop featuring one of my favorite two new mics, the Cardinal and the Raven. The one pictured here is the Cardinal and was developed by Blue mics and made by EV in a partnership. I hope that this marks the beginning of some new activity in EV's mic line. They could use a nice boost there because at the moment they seem to be riding the old RE(PL)20's for all their worth. So anyways, this is an amazing Vocal mic but also works beautifully for other things like acoustic guitar and just look at how gorgeous the design of the thing is, its a work of art! This desktop has two watermarks there because it is a promotional desktop for the mic that I made. I know its not going to mean to much to the average visitor to this site but I thought I would post it anyways. Enjoy!

"Lightkea" and "Lightkea two"

So here is a subject that I thought about shooting for quite some time now and I am just now getting around to posting something of it. Not quite as exciting as I thought it might be but thats ok, they still turned out pretty nice I think. Can anyone guess the subject here? I guess its a pretty specific product really but I'm sure some one knows what it is.

"Blue" and "Blue Two"

I see desktops all over the web and I am always paying attention to the latest trends in what people seem to like on their desktops. Seems like everyone loves a nice vector illustration or an overzealous image killed by photoshop. Im not saying that there's not anything good in all of that, I love a bit of illustrative work here and there but eventually it all seems to blend together you know? I have a huge amount of respect for artists that seem to be doing something that appears to be a reflection of what they see in their mind and through their eyes rather than making shallow attempts to keep up with the trends within design or show off the fact that they learned how to use the latest graphics app. Alternately, taking these trends to some sort of personal level and fusing their own visions with them in a way that might allow for design and art to continue to evolve.

I have no idea if I help inspire anyone with my work or not but here within these desktops you will find little pieces of my life, little pieces of the world around me that I think others might enjoy. Sometimes these things are elaborate but generally these little peaks into my everyday are really simplified versions of the things I see. I can only hope that I continue to grow as an artist and garner the respect of other artists along the way. I guess sometimes I wonder if I will stand out as an artist or get lost in the mix. Only time can tell right?

So onto the new desktops, I have a couple of simple additions to the gallery here today. These shots are of the side of the head of a guitar amp. Bonus points for anyone who can tell me the name of the amp/company. Sorry for that bit of heart to heart with everyone. Enjoy the images! (I love the color of the blue in these, they make for a nice cushy looking computer screen. )

"Used"

This was shot in a huge used bookstore in NYC. It was somewhat overwhelming and I couldn't really focus to well because of a cold. It would be nice to go back and explore the next time I'm up there.

"Quiet Nights"

This was shot a the end of a walk around Vals neighborhood which had gotten together and put out luminaries (white bags with sand and a lit candle in the bottom) along every street in the area. It made for a really peaceful winter walk. I did end up making the image a bit smaller and placed it in the center of the desktop and this is because i was not happy with the amount of noise present in the dark areas of the image. i was shooting sans tripod so i had to stop down a bit and use some high iso settings. Anyways, this image ended up being a really really nice desktop for the holidays and whatnot so check it out!

"Try Your Luck"

I know that I dont have much in the way of holiday photography so I thought i would post the closest thing to anything holidayish that would work for a desktop so far and here it is! some bears crammed against the glass in a claw style game at an arcade!

"imac two"

I had to take apart an old imac recently to replace the hard drive and let me tell you, it's not an easy thing to do. The hard drive was burried deep down in the thing. It's amazing how they managed to cram a computer into this thing.

"mic one"

These three desktops are of an Electro-Voice RE-20 (PL-20) that the radio station that I DJ at (wuag) uses for the vocal mic. I was there late sunday and decided it might make some nice desktops. They are a little on the blurry side and a little noisy at full res because I shot it at a high ISO and shot it sans tripod. At any rate they are pretty nice as desktops. Hope you like them.

Heres a strange one for you. This dog was part of a kids concert with big fuzzy dogs as the musicians. Fun!

"fireworks two"

This is an alternate version of the other fireworks image below that I added a couple of simple effects to to make it a bit more dramatic and abstract for those of you who are into that sort of thing. Enjoy!

"fireworks one"

I shot some fireworks while I was running the sound on a stage at the seafood festival a couple weeks ago and I made this collage of the photos and made them a yellowish color for some sort of reason that i cant really explain. This version is simply a layered image of a few shots of fireworks.

"harbor chain two"

These two images of a chain were shot in a NC harbor that I was working near this past weekend. They were the guard rails to keep people from venturing to close to t he edge or the dock. I like the simplicity of this shot and the movement the chain gives your eye as it sweeps across the photo.

"harbor chain one"

this angle shows a bit more of the surrounding area which I like because the image lets this happen without being to distracting. The chain gives a nice focal point and you can kind of image yourself sitting there, leaning up against a post on a harbor.

"bolt three"

This little series of desktops I thought would be a nice addition here because I don't really have to much in the way of industrial type of images on twistedsun.net. I really like the detail that appears in these images. As with some of the close up nature shots, these bolt images seem to do a good job illustrating the subtleties in the world. It's just so cool thinking that there is some sort of story behind every detail in the world, even if it's a small one, it's still there.

"bolt two"

I like this series of bolt photos, they work well as a desktop simply because of the way they are laid out leaving some nice space for stuff on your desktop. I like this one simply because of the number stamped there on the washer. I have no idea what it means but I'm sure it's somebody's favorite number..?

"Mix"

This was shot while I was running the audio for the bluegrass stage at a festival in Winston Salem. I had brought my camera with me for whatever reason and was just fiddling around while I had a moment. the sun was in my face for the first couple of hours which made the job annoying but I snapped off some nice photos so that kind of makes it worth my while? So anyways, heres a nice simple desktop of the mixing board I was using.

"Gull"

I have a really nice desktop for everyone. It's a shot of a big gaudy plastic bird handing from the rear view mirror in my car! I really blew out the exposure on it and I think its really gorgeous the way the image kind of floats out of the white. Its safe to say you might see some more experiments with this in the future.
